Just before the Rhône meets the Camargue delta, a ridge of dramatic limestone hills rise into panoramic views and hidden valleys where some of the best wineries in Provence lie next to beautiful villages. From Avignon we walk through olive groves and pine forests to the typically Provençal village of Barbentane. At the top of la Montagnette is St Michel de Frigolet Abbey, from where we continue to Tarascon and Les Baux via the crest of les Alpilles - magnificent views across the escarpment. At St Rémy are the Gallo-Roman ruins of Glanum and from the beautiful hilltop town of Eygalières we look across the plain to Mont Ventoux and the Durance valley. Finally we walk the Aurelian way to Maussane for the last night.
