Far off the west
coast of Africa lies the island of Madeira with breathtaking sea cliffs,
lush and misty valleys and stark mountain terracing. With a warm climate
all year round the 'Pearl of the Atlantic' offers you a chance to escape
into a peaceful haven with dazzling flora. Nothing to do with cooking
wine, a true Madeira, be it bone dry or rich and sweet, is probably the
longest living and surely the most underrated wine in the world. We explore
much of this enchanted isle, by footpath and scenic levada watercourse,
trying traditional Madeiran wines on the way. Our small hotels and private
houses are chosen for their ambience, welcome and good food which is dominated
by excellent sea food and wonderful fruit from the sub-tropical climate.
